I intercepted this supercell on September 1, 2014 at Strother Field, a small Kansas airport situated between Arkansas City and Winfield. As the storm approached, it became a prolific cloud to ground lightning producer. The day before, Iowa storm chaser Danny Murphy had been struck by lightning and this terrifying thought filled on my mind as bolts landed around me. I was shooting a time lapse movie of this storm so I held my ground as long as possible as the wall cloud drew ever closer. When deadly bolts began landing on the runway I abandoned my position to escape the barrage.
Coincidentally the 2016 Weather Guide Calendar featuring my image arrived today.
