Unlike many, I love the term Unconditional Surrender. In the militarized western world, unconditional surrender has a negative connotation because it is thought to be what losers do. But, I do not use the term in this sense. Instead, I use it in the spiritual sense, like Unconditional Love or Unconditional Beauty. In my opinion, Unconditional Surrender is a strength, perhaps even a super-power.
When I practice Unconditional Surrender, I develop an uncompromisingly honest relationship with reality. I don't try to fool myself and others about who and what I am. And, I don't expect others to be different from who they are. I stop wishing that people are different and I stop dreaming I am someone else. When I practice Unconditional Surrender, I am also able to practice Unconditional Love and observe Unconditional Beauty in everything and everybody.
Unconditional Surrender does not mean I give up on myself and the world. In fact, the opposite is true. When I surrender to reality, I find that self-hate and my anger about this world subside. This results in a clear mind that is better able to see the ways I can cultivate myself and other beings.
My painting titled Unconditional Surrender illustrates lessons the natural world teaches me. This artwork represents the way light and dark, hot and cool surrender to each other and transition in ways that result in an appealing image.
